Is it illegal to download music from Imeem and myspace?

If they don't have permission or have licensing rights from the artist/label to distribute, then most likely, yes.

Thats where it gets confusing. What if john dowe is not distributing the music but keeping it for himself? Understandably this is not a the correct form to discus legal disputes. But Ill leave it as a thought. I may ask in the general discussion form one day

The legalities are a bit in the gray area, as a few important cases that deal with these laws are going through court right now, or will be shortly.
For the most part, the responsibilities of copyright infringement lay with the individual for making the work available. The part about making a backup copy of your purchase for private use should fall under "fair use" but industry labels are disputing the point. Either way, I'm not a lawyer, so don't take my words as legal truth. On another note, if it's music you want, check out the internet archive netlabels, SXSW, and garage band sites. |
