Getting started, you should do as many sites as possible, free or paying to build up your portfoilio. Once you have enough established clients, they will refer people to you. It is not always a speedy process, so be patient with it.

Lead Generation

Coming from the same industry. I would say this.

A portfolio is a must, you gotta be able to show off your stuff.

Never depend on referals just turning up. Ask for them!

By far the best way of getting leads is to knock on business doors. Take some prepared literature with you. Keep it simple and impactive. Always ask for the Boss. No good talking to a non-decision maker.

You'll get a lot of doors slammed in your face. It's a numbers game. If you've got lots of front and you know you're stuff, you'll succeed. Don't let the knock backs deter you, each new business door could be that next order.

Lastly don't under sell yourself. If it sounds too cheap, they'll be suspicious! if it sounds too much, you can always come down!

Finding a company that works within the field is good, but the pay is not. A multimedia or graphic arts degree is a must in most situations. I have an Associate in Applied Science, multimedia field. No one is interested so I'm stuck installing cable modems (that's ok, it pays better).

Yes a portfolio is a must!

Another option is freelance, check out http://www.elance.com you will find it interesting.
