Firefox not displaying special characters

Hi all,

I have a problem with firefox and cant figure it out.

It doesnt display a bunch of special characters, which includes both asian language characters and mathematical symbols. It displays a box with two numbers in it.

All hits that i found on google tell me to go Tools -> Options -> Content -> Fonts & Colours -> Advanced, and change the default character encoding to Unicode UTF-8.

This doesnt fix the problem, the strange boxes are still there. Screenshot of the problem is here - http://tinyurl.com/m9gmrq
In this case, i think the characters are chinese? Not sure, the weblink that the shot was taken of is here - http://www.n2c.com.au/content/blogcategory/15/38/

Can anyone help?

Thanks heaps!!

Ach, i knew i'd forget to mention something!

No, they don't display in IE either, but they simply appear as boxes, no numbers in them like for firefox.

Ok, found those checkboxes and ticked them, it asks for my Windows CD, which I insert - but it cant find the files on the CD Searched manually through the CD for a few of the files it asked for, and the search results came up empty.

Every resource i can find says that i need the windows CD, and the language pack is not available online.
(eg. http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/h...pintlsupp.mspx,
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/32...-language-pack,
and theres more... )

But i am thoroughly confused - im pretty sure i have used this disc to install windows before and not had a problem with special characters.

And yes, my copy IS legitimate - its an OEM version, would that make a difference? Thats the only thing i can think of.

Thanks a bunch to glc and Force Flow
