FTP on website
Hey,
I'm looking for an easy way for clients to go to my website (or a webpage with a gui) and be able to drag and drop files via ftp to my server. Simplicity is the key here - People with no technical experience need to be able to operate it, and it just needs to work. I've been trying IE and Filezilla, and everyone has issues on each try. Is anything like this available?

Absolute simplest is using explorer. You can create a shortcut to the FTP.
Next step up is an actual FTP client, and filezilla is pretty much the go-to client these days. There's really no simpler way to approach it than these to methods...these folks are going to have to just sit down and learn, or have someone else do it. What "issues" are they having?

Their connections time out and they're never able to connect. I have Filezilla set in passive mode as well.

timeouts shouldn't be an issue...as far as I know, IE automatically reconnects, as does filezilla.
If it doesn't work properly with IE, the username/password might not be stored. In firezilla, there is a "keep alive" option under Edit > settings > connection > FTP. If the timeouts are really causing serious issues, you might want to increase the idle time on the server (you'll have to talk to your hosting provider) |

I'm actually running Filezilla server on my desktop so that people can connect and send files directly. I plan on setting up a box soon so that I can run this separately and not tie up my machine (and cut back on the obvious security risks in doing what I'm doing).

You don't have your router set up correctly. Put the files on a commercial host.

How should I set it up then? I'd like to be able to do this from home.

Dynamic DNS service, static local IP, and appropriate ports forwarded. Be aware that most residential ISP's do not allow public servers, you are risking your service. Get a commercial service that allows servers or use a commercial host.
There is a strong possibility your ISP is blocking the FTP port for this very reason. Last edited by glc; 07-11-2009 at 12:55 PM. |
