What are the benefits and different uses for a self-built server?

In lieu of?
If you mean in lieu of something such as a webhosting account or rented space on someone else's server, it's the fact that you don't share a machine with other users, so you have full use of the hardware. If you're running a game server, large database(s), etc., you might need more than shared resources will allow. |

A server in hardware terms isn't any different from your desktop PC, it's what it does. Website hosting, email hosting, game hosting, databases, etc.
