IE6 Won't keep History
I did the Windows Update yesterday from IE5 to IE6 and everything seemed fine. Problem is when you click the History button the left pane no longer contains the history of previously visited sites like before. There is a "History" folder with the file "index.dat" in it, along with the file "desktop.ini" under the index.dat file. I deleted the whole History folder to let IE6 rebiuld the files, but it just puts the same ones back when you open IE6 again. I tried the repair...no change. There are a couple of other strange differences I notice in this IE6 version from Windows Update. Now, my Cookies, History, and Temporary Internet Files are subfolders of my Windows/Temp directory rather than folders in the Windows Directory. I also have 3 new folders on my "C" drive...they are %Cache%, %Cookies%, and %History%. These % folders are all empty but cannot be deleted due to a message that windows must have them to run. This is really the first problem I've ever had with windows update. Although it's minor, it would be nice for the history to work. There are several references to this in Microsoft Newsgroups, but no answers. There is a MS knowledge base suggesting that if you shut down with the History folder open you may have to reinstall or repair, but I have done that with no changes. The Windows Update was specifically for IE6 for Win98SE, but there appear to be some problems with this configuration. Any IE6 experts out there?
Thanks,

No, I didn't uninstall/reinstall yet. I am a little uncertain about uninstalling something that was installed with windows update. Someone suggested to me that the directories with the % signs around them are there because I do not log in to this computer like you have to with XP. I set this one up just to turn and bring up the OS without a password. Others have suggested it is something to do with Norton AV. There are others in the Microsoft newsgroups with the same problem with IE6 in Win98.
