Hi all,
I think this question has been posted before, but I can't remember. I recently downloaded the new Netscape 6.2, and after 2 years as a loyal IE user, I'm looking to switch default browsers (really like Netscape's speed and features). How do you change default browsers from IE to Netscape? Thanks in advance. |

Control panel, Internet options, find the box that says "IE should check to see if it's the default browser" and uncheck it - then install Netscape. The first time you start Netscape, it should ask you and you say yes.

Thanks GLC. Figured it had to do with that 'box', but if Netscape is already installed, I need to uninstall it for this to work, right?

No. I have 5 browsers installed, for example.

Hi Sarge,
What I meant was for GLC's fix to work, do I have to uninstall Netscape, uncheck the box, then reinstall. Netscape is already on my system. I tried GLC's fix and it didn't work. |

You make an Internet connection. There's a shortcut on desktop for Netscape. What happens when you select it (message about making it default browser?). If so, "yes". I don't see the problem, as you can use either browser, just select NS when surfing.
If you want to get real technical, check this out, but be "careful": http://www.windows-help.net/bbs/Forum9/HTML/001474.html Last edited by SARGE; 11-27-2001 at 09:17 PM. |

I've used older versions of Netscape where, when opening them, I've been asked if I want to make it my default browser. When I open Netscape 6.2, however, this message does not come up, and I see nothing in preferences about it.

The Fix? Kind of...
Thanks for the link, Sarge. Think I found the fix there, kind of. I opened Netscape. Went to Edit - Preferences - Advanced - System. Checked off all the http protocols. Went back to Outlook and clicked a link (to PCMechanic, of course
) and Netscape opened. I initally though, "pretty cool". I then, however, went back to check the path that I used, and Preferences wouldn't open. Also, I found that a dialogue box had opened in 'My Documents' looking for an executable file for an internet browser. I assumed M$ was confused over why IE wasn't opening. Anyway, the only way to get Netscape Preferences to open was to reboot. Will continue to try to figure out a better fix.

Best fix was to uninstall and reinstall Netscape. After the reinstall, the 'do you want Netscape to be your default browser' window popped up. Clicked 'yes' and now no problems.
