I always assumed the only thing you could download is the installer, once the installer was executed it needed an internet connection to finish the install,

I imagine lots of spying was going on at that time..............

I always paid the small fee and had it sent to me on disk from Microsoft.

Find and AOL CD, they grow on trees.

From it you can install a stripped down version of IE 5, and from then when you get online, download the full version.

AOL (the latest one, version 7?) has IE5.5SP2 included (with branding) in the R:\AOL50B\MSIE50 folder.
Once you've got it installed, you can go to windowsupdates and get the rest of the stuff, or at least install WMP (although WHY you would want to do that is beyond me).
You could just install IE from your windows CD, via the add/remove programs (in Control Panel) Windows setup tab.
Personally, if you're just looking for a good media player, why not get IrFanView? It's free, will fit on a floppy, and works for just about every media type around (except divx, and .mov, but you can get the codecs for them too).

If you can't find a copy of MSIE on a disk and you have already downloaded and installed MSIE on another computer you can copy the "c:\windows update" folder onto a cdr/cdrw and use that to install MSIE on the computer without the internet connection. This folder contains all the MSIE .cab files as well as the install executable. I actually rename this folder so that I remember what it is (eg. MSIE 5.5) and keep it backed up just in case I need to reinstall MSIE following a fresh install of Windows, which saves me the hassle of downloading the whole thing again on a dialup connection

Internet Explorer can be installed from disk or a file saved to disk. It's done all the time. But if you're using Windows 95 and Internet Explorer 3, you have to upgrade to IE 4 first. You are going to be missing the files you need if you go directly from IE 3 to IE 5x.

If someone has an old ISP installation disk, it may have IE 4.01 on it. I think the old FreeInet had Intenet Explorer 4.01.
