IE doesn't work!

Suddenly IE 5 stopped working.

A friend of mine has a Compaq Presario (I don't remember the model), and she called me over yesterday. IE just doesn't work, it only displays its "not found" page. You type an address but it does nothing.

I tried reinstalling and it refused to install because "IE detected an early version of IE and won't install". I tried uninstall it but "this version of IE cannot be uninstalled". Nor can it be upgraded or repaired.

Is there a solution for this problem other than pulling out the Restore disks and reformating?

IE can be uninstalled. You have to do it through the Windows update site.
Once you are at the windows update site and you click on Product Updates, you then click on Show Installed Updates, then scroll down to IE and you will see an uninstall option at the right of it.
