Question IP Address logged - Are we safe??

Hi all,

When you get someones IP address is there a way you can trace them? Such as this site has all of our IP addresses logged. Can they find out where we live, what ISP we are using etc etc just by knowing the IP addresss? This would be very interesting to find out about.

you are plenty safe if you are using a good firewall. I use Norton which
has worked very well for me. Test your firewall to see if its secure at
a site called 'shields up'. There are settings such as stealth which
hides your ports when some dingleberry is scanning ports. I use Kazaa, and
my modem was resetting and I was getting booted while using this service.
I went into my settings and selected 'Block Igmp protocol' and they couldnt
kick me off anymore. SOmeone had obtained my IP and was doing this. select>Block IGMP to block the use of the Internet Group Management Protocol, a standard for IP multicasting on the Internet. Attackers sometimes exploit this protocol to hang a victim’s machine once they obtain its IP address.

In answer to your question on whether they can determine our location.
They can get a general idea by using the website below.

Most users have dynamic IP addresses, meaning that the one you have now might be used by some other customer of your ISPs tomorrow. Your ISP owns a pool of IPs which they distribute to users as they log in.

So, you can be narrowed down to an ISP, which if you use a local ISP would narrow you down to a location (city/state/etc.).

If legality were in question, your ISP could be queried for logs to determine who had the IP address in question when said illegality was committed.

So, in a word, yes possibly, if you use no means available to you to mask your public IP address, it can be traced back to you.

Venturer - You really should not have done that last night, but this time we will let you off with a warning not to do it again. By the way can you tilt your monitor down and to the left a little bit, we see entirely to much of the ceiling.
