I want to host my own website.
My company is currently using DSL (High-Speed Internet provided by Bell Canada)
It is possible for us to host our own domain under our server? Or would it be too slow for hosting. The speed of the DSL is 1Mps. We are using is Window 2000 Advance Server. |

Hi Hau,
It is possible to set up a server and domain on a DSL line, but it would require:

Thanks, that is really helpful. I will look it up. a. I am not too sure if I have a fast upload and download connection. Here is the result I got from speedtest.net Test Number: 1 Test Type: Download 1 Megabyte Bytes Downloaded: 1048576 bytes Download time: 10550 milliseconds. Throughput: 0.758 Mbps Test Number: 2 Test Type: Upload 1 Megabyte Bytes Uploaded: 1048576 bytes Upload time: 82660 milliseconds. Throughput: 0.097 Mbps Is that fast enough? b. I could get my IP to stay consistance. |

yes, you can host your own website, however, be aware of a few things:
1. you must have a static IP address, which, your DSL provider can probabbly provide for you. 2. you must have a dedicated machine that is on 24/7 that JUST hosts your website. this machine needs at LEAST 512MB RAM, and a fast (i would reccomend SCSI) hard drive 3. you DSL provider must allow you to host your own site (many will specifically NOT let you do so) 4. bandwidth only matters in terms of convience to your guests. technically, you could host a website on a dialup 56K connection, however, i would not suggest it, as it would be insanely slow. We have a 1.1 Mbps DSL line (up and down) that we host a bunch of sites off of no problem. However, this is a commercial line, and costs $450 a month, and has 30 static IP addresses. 5. i would strongly suggest not even trying to host yer own site, you can find plently of webhosts that will host non-DB driven sites for $5 to $10 a month. |
