Roger that. She lit up when we downloaded IE 6 in 4 minutes on other pc, normally a 2 hour trip. She's happy, boys are happy and once again I'm on a pedestal around here (see how long THAT lasts ).

Yea I was reading your thread Well she won with great interest.
Looks like getting this network set up was a lot of work.
This thread is definitly a saver and I will be using it for future reference
when I attempt to set my DSL home network up. The help that GLC and the other members offered is invaluable.

Just a note: I started with a cheep router and had nothing but problems (the tech even crashed my pc trying to set it up!!!) I finally took the local "Two Geeks" advice and bought a D-link DI-804 and was in like flin within 30 mins..Our DSL provider's kit had all the goodies in it ie: filter for phone and all the necessities. I even built a network with a server! (just to do it) I really like the router but the only problem is that when my buddy needs to help me with something and he needs to get into my pc I have to disconnect the router cause of the firewall nature!! If ya got any ideas on getting around this I would really appreciate it (of course probably thousands of hackers would too!!) Welcome to the world of speed and happy wives Scotty

Cool

Hey scotty, what firewall are you using? If you "gasp" pay for the full version it usually gives you options to open certain ports, then you could use some remote software like VNC or PC Anywhere.

I used to use Zonealarm and stopped using any thing, as a matter of fact I got the Nimda virus a couple of weeks ago and now I use a small hdd to surf and do file transfers. I just scan them with a few programs like Command on Demand and PCCillin before I do any thing with it (transfer to other hdd) I'll get back with ya on this Scotty

tiny firewall

i was reading some threads and wanted to pass this along in case anyone is interested. i started using a new firewall on my home network called Tiny Firewall.
You can download it here
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...C8051%2C00.asp
and there is some good FAQ's here
http://clix.to/tpffaq
i quit using zone on XP and I don't have a lot of faith in M/S's firewall that came with XP.
Its much more configurable then zone.
I also now use it on 98, it seems so much bettter.
If you want something that you don't have to config, I'd say leave it alone.

Tiny Personal Firewall is a really user friendly firewall. I have used it and I guess it is good enough for desktop's. I still don't use a FW! I just keep the PCcillin active now and use my 2gig hdd for any on line activity I guess my router is doin it's job but I don't know cause I don't have any tool that tells me if I am getting scanned.
(Another Question)
Is there a tool for just intrusion detection without using a firewall????
I'm sure there is! Scotty
