Replacing accounts on a PC

We have a school computer that was used at home by an adminstrator for Internet access. We have the computer back now, and we use the same ISP at school as the administrator did at his home. Now we get their e-mail and the ISP likes to dump us from the line, possibly because someone at their home is on-line at the same time?

We had uninstalled the original ISP-provided software and reloaded our version with our user name and password, but there are a bunch of old files and/or directories that must still be active from the original install. What do we look for to delete to get this thing back to pristine condition? We've already deleted History, Cookies, Temporary Internet Files, Temp and Recent. What have we missed?

Hi Dean,

What OS is this computer running? Also what type of internet connection are you using, I'm assuming dialup? If so, check in your dialup networking folder what connections there are, and remove any that you don't need if there a multiple connections. I'm assuming there might be and perhaps it's using the admistrators settings in the default connection it dials instead of yours, but I could be wrong.

Let me also ask you this, if you are dialing up, is your password and username listed in the dialup window or is it the administrators? HTH

A little more info

I should have used the term "principal", "director" or "superintendent" rather an than "administrator". After I read your reply, I realized how utterly confusing in a networking/Internet environment "administrator" is when talking about the school principal!

The OS is '98 and as you surmised, it is a dial-up connection. The log-in and password look OK on our end. I'll have to figure out which folders would be the ones to which you're referring.

Hi Dean,

I was referring to dialup networking, to find it go to: My Computer and then doubleclick on dialup networking, and see if there are any other connections in there that you don't need.

As for chaning the email, what email program are you using?

The E-mailer

We're using Virus Express ... er, Outlook Express.

I'm starting to hate the particular computer in question anyway. We just installed a new motherboard and it's supposed to be running at 233MHz but takes a minute longer to load Winders than does our 166MHz machine and when on the Internet, takes 45 seconds to respond to a "Add to Favorites" click. So, the orignal question may be moot if we decided to trash the whole thing and start over by cleaning the HDD and reloading Winders and all the other junk we need.
