Help!! I can't download anything!!
Hi everyone
I have had to reinstall WIN98SE tonite as my girlfriend messed with the registry!! Very angry. Now when I connect to the WWW i cannot download anything. I went to Windows update but that wouldn't let me download anything & also I have tried updating my virus definitions but that doesn't work either. I am very frustrated as this reinstallation has been a bit of a nightmare!! I would be grateful for any help.

Did you format and repartition before you did the reinstall. If not try that, then do a clean re-install. Win 98 may not have installed correctly.

I dont know what to tell you except that it sounds like a bad win98 install. Sometimes even when you do everything right you still get a bad 98 install. I would redo it. Hopefully you havnt already been thru the pain of re-installing everything. A suggestion: After you reinstall immediately try the win update, that way you will know if the problem is gone.

Open IE > Tools > Internet Options
From the General Tab of Temporary Internet Files Click the Settings button Then click the VIEW OBJECTS. Do you have the CV3 class object? If so right click on it and click REMOVE. Check if there are any other objects installed. You can remove most of them cos they are install on demand. Next click on the SECURITY settings of your IE internet options. What mode are you on? Custom? If you are very sure of what sites you are going to, turn the security to MINIMUM or lowest level for now. Otherwise, in the custom level Make sure that you have PROMPT FOR signed ActiveX controls, and ENABLE on RUN ACTIVEX CONTROLS AND PLUG-INS, and SCRIPT ACTIVEX CONTROLS. Click ENABLE FILE DOWNLOAD. Then close down all instances of IE that are open. Restart IE and try going to your windowsupdate site. You should come up with a permissions screen. BTW ..are you using IE 6? If so enable all your cookies. |

Thanks Statica. I tried the options you mentioned but still I can't download. The exact message that appears on the site is "could not be installed because of an unknown error (-2147012889)". Mmmmm I am a little confused.......Oh & I am running IE 5.5.
