Making A Faster Browser

Anyone ever try this?

http://www.the-scream.co.uk/html/res...reg_tweak.html

Does editing the decimal value mean deleting entire line and just have the 6 or 8 on line by itself?

Hi Sarge...I'm willing to try about anything, so last night I edited the registry per the links instructions. I have DEFINITELY noticed a difference in page loading times!!!! Although I have DSL it hangs occasionally, or loads sluggishly. Since I implemented this tweak about 90% of my sites are opening almost immediately. Others mileage may differ, but from me to you thanks for the link!

Congrats. From what I gather, IE 5.5 and 6.0 don't need the tweak. I use 6.0 and even if I had an earlier version, I don't feel froggy enough to jump. Haven't had much luck lately at tweaking w/o causing problems.

I tried it on IE 6.0 then went to some sites that always lag and its way quicker I did have to add the keys manually but there are instructions for that to

thanks for the tip

o.k, been running this tweak for a few days and it is amazing!!! I'm on I.E. 5.5 and the decrease in page loading times is absolutely stunning (ex: of total times: 2 seconds from pcmech to ebay....3 seconds from ebay to cdrlabs....2.5 seconds from cdrlabs to msnbc...1 second to pcforest...1 second to pentstar systems...etc, etc)) Best tweak I've come across in ages!!! Thanks again.

Looks interesting. Would someone who has done it show how it should look.
I'm with Sarge. I've edited the registry many a time, but the "decimal 6 or 8" throws me.
Thank you,
Carl

Wow, I just did the tweak and it actually works pretty well. I'm using IE6 with WinXP. Here's what you need to add.

Go to
Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS
Add (as DWORD) or change these:
Code:
MaxConnectionsPerServer 6
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server 8
Thanks Sarge!

Carl, just follow instructions at site. I asked the original question before even trying it. When you right click the value and select modify, it brings up the little window. Change the # to desired, select "decimal" and exit out. IE 6.0 already has one with tweaked #, just change other (1st entry) to a 6. Mine was at 4. BTW, didn't notice much using dsl, but 56k users might, according to above posts.

Now that it's so easy, I'm thinking about tinkering with the #'s, for testing purposes.

I'm going to have to add the strings also. I use IE6 and they're not there.

Mine were on 6.0, but then I upgraded from 5.5. Maybe they carried over. Carl, backup the Reg first if you're adding. You've had enough problems lately

I am running 5.01 SP2 and would like to tweak my settings because dial-up sucks. Did any of you back-up the registry like the site reccomended or should I just jump into it. TIA

Always back up Registry, just in case. It's a simple procedure and fast. Just follow the yellow brick road, encounter no witches, and it will work.

edrod, let us know if it improves yours.

SARGE,

Will do, I get off late but will post ASAP. I would like to hear from other dial-up users and see what they encountered. TIA

I added the DWORD strings in ie 6.0 and i noticed that i was a bit faster. My computer seems to stall a bit right at the beginning but once the data start moving it goes nice and fast now. Any idea on how to get rid of the stall???

Thanks a bunch!

Maybe it's breaking in, getting used to new settings, stunned that someone figured out how to make it work better. To answer your question, I don't know about the stall. Was lucky to even stumble across this tweak.

Here's a couple notes to check.
Went back into the registry to check my settings. The one to be set at 8 changed to 6. The other changed to 0 and both read hexidecimal. Changed back to the settings for the tweak and everything so far has stayed the same.
Another note. While in the registry, go down and check History. You might be surprised to see all the folders for spyware that is supposed to be removed by AdAware. I deleted doubleclick, Ad-flow, Valueclick, to name a few.

I know YOU are the one who usually hands these out but I just gotta say AMEN. I am dancing a jig as a type. This tweak even helped us in the 7th level of AOHell. It almost makes dialup a borderline pleasurable experience. Greatest tweak ever. Really belongs in the HOF.
Thanks a ton!!!!

LOL.....Well Sarge, I second the nomination for a Hall Of Fame entry. Even though I have DSL this tweak has made my browsing experience infinitely more enjoyable. And yes, even AOL has gotten a bit of a kick in the arse. Any thoughts of a presidential bid in 2005? You've got my vote!

I would imagine the dial up gets helped a lot as I tried it with my cable connection and do notice an increase in speed.
