Help: can't log onto net via cable modem

Hi guys,
The guy who lives upstairs from me asked me to help him get on the web via a cable connection. He's got a compaq laptop and is trying to log onto the web. The modem looks to be hooked up correctly and I reinstalled the drivers to make sure. After installation I rebooted and clicked on the explorer icon and there is no connection. He's running Win98. I myself have dial-up and am inexperienced when it comes to this kind of interface although it really doesn't look that complicated. Help let me know if I missed anything. As always Thanks.

Go to then Network Neighborhood Icon and click, then add a new connection, follow the boxes to add it as a LAN.

Typically the cable service provider will require that the PC be uniquely identified to their network with a specific hostname. If you can find out what it is, simply change the PC hostname and you should be set to go. Also, check that TCP/IP is set up right (will likely be in a DHCP configuration)
