Hello Carl,
It shouldn't be a surprise that the Micky$oft O/S's and IE are about the same as painting a target on your butt and yelling: "Target here!"
So long as there is Micky$oft Winderz, security will be a distant second.
Be aware that the Micky$oft Corporation was FORCED to path IE and Windows, not of their own doing.
There is little one can do to make IE and Micky$oft secure. There are apps and the like that help but any hacker/phreaker that knows thier beans gets around these patches with ease.
People are often critical about Netscape/Mozilla being either "not as pretty" or incompatible with certain HTML.
Its not incompatability but rather an indication of a secure browser.
Countless times these were proven when security minded folks broke into Micky$oft servers and mail demons and caused much grief to Micky$oft.
You wanted "pretty" and overall compatability at the expense of security.
In response, Micky$oft gave unto you, IE.
I suggest and highly recommend Mozilla. You may find it here: www.mozilla.org

The next time your credit card shows a transaction that you didn't make....remember that HIGHLY VISABLE target you display when using a Micky$oft browser.

There has been a critical update on the Windows Update site for a few weeks now that closes this. All Windows 98 and above users should install this update.
