www.dogpile.com is a good meta-search engine.

Another vote for Google......
I just installed the Google toolbar.I saw it before on their page,
but I just never bothered with it.I am sure glad I got it.It makes it
nice not having to go to the website to do a search.Heres the link in case
anyone would like to check it out.
http://toolbar.google.com/

Unless something has changed recently, Yahoo is an invite-only index. You have to submit your site to them for "approval" to get it listed.

Therefore, Yahoo does not qualify as a search engine in my opinion.

Google. I have it set as my home page. Usually when I want to search something, I open another browser to get info. Therefore, I want to acess Google directly.

Google is without a doubt the best of the pure search engines, but for a start page I have always used www.hotsheet.com as it has links to just about anything that you ever wanted.

Google is indeed king... and this may be down to how it creates its lists...

Erucader - whilst some 'search engines' require the website to be submitted there are other 'proper' search engines that use 'web-crawlers' (these use the meta tag info to match searches)... I'm no expert, but have read a couple of articles that seemed to give pretty good explanantions... Google goes one step further (though maybe other search engines do this as well) - it searches the web and finds links to the sites as well... sites with more links to them to appear nearer the top of the list. If they're linked to from 'high profile' sites (say bbc.co.uk) then this gives them more 'points' and pushes them even nearer the top... I guess the theory is that if a site has lots of links pointing to it there must be a good reason for this... this in combination with meta-tag info means searches on Google give great results...

As I said I'm no expert, and I'm sure there's some complicated coding going on... Whatever - it's damn good at what it does...
