IE: Frequent 'illegal operation-shutdown'

My kids constantly getting 'illegal operation/shutdown' on the IE browser even when you just boot up and enter something in Google and hit 'enter'
Tons of RAM- 192 Mb , nothing else running and minimised, just did ScanDisc and Defrag, What could be causing this? Thanks !

Send a message via AIM to Xayd
Possible that IE is corrupted, I'd download a service pack (which is essentially a reinstall) and see if that fixes it.

Downloaded and installed the service pack, and also ran a virus check
but neither helped. I think your right-its the browser. If no one has another idea I think I'll uninstall IE completely and re install it.
Failing that maybe install another browser and see if problem persists.Thanks.

Talking

Have you tried the repair option in Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs?

Start/Settings/Control Panel/ Add-Remove. Scroll down and highlight the IE listing and click on remove tab. You should see an option to repair IE. It is worth a shot.

Thanks for the help- its getting worse !
"Illegal operation- shutdown" has now spread outside of the browser.
Ran Innoculate-it virus scan - nothing. Ran McAfee and found two
SirCam virus files and deleted them. Computer then crashed and only booted
up after many attempts with a 'start up'/rescue' diskette. Now getting a DOS message on bootup : " cannot find file- VSHINIT.VXD -try reinstalling associated application" )(a Windows device/application driver, according to Webopedia.com)
Re ran Virus check- all OK.
a) What can be causing this "illegal operation/shut down"
b) what could this vshinit.vxd file be-( its not on the Windows CD)
so I can replace it.
Thanks.

Ask your kids if they were downloading cracked free software. This is a common cause for such errors. Usually a back orifice type program is launched with cracks, but then again they just run in stealth mode in the background and usually do not produce errors.

Here are a few links to eradicate it.

SirCam was brutal to us and it was the only one that took our WAN network down for more than a 2 minutes in the past 5 years.

Cool

I do believe IE6 needs some serious patching from MS. I was getting a lot of them on my WIN98 system, but since it was 2 years old, I figured some things were corrupted and probably needing a format and starting over. I built this new system with XP Pro and IE6 and new out of the box I'm getting illegal operations.
