Why am I sending and receiveing Bytes???
One of my computers is on a dial-up line. Lately, the little activity lights in the system tray that show download/upload activity are constantly lit, even with the browser closed. When I double click on it and open the "Connected to My Connection" box to see the activity, it shows bytes actively being received and sent like crazy! Again, this happens even with the browser closed. What's going on?

Hi Ron,
Open the DOS Command Prompt and type in netstat, it will list the IP (or actual address) of all incomming/outgoing connections, maybe that will provide some more info.

Me thinks I would be installing Zone Alarm and running virus scans on my puter very quickly. On the other hand, maybe an auto update program running or something to that effect?? Back when I was new to computing I somehow got the subseven trojen on my puter and even though I had zonealarm installed I actually let this thing run for a long time before I realized what was happening. Turns out it was disguised as explorer.exe and being a newbie at the time I thought it was internet explorer trying to access the net. Well it wasn't and norton antivirus finally picked it up after an update and I proceeded to get it off (pita). Needless to say I'm much more aware of what is going on with my puter now and it seemed to be a very good lesson for me. Mark

I'm running Zone Alarm and a good AV program.
But I think I found the problem. Instant Messenger and MSN IM were running in the system tray. |

Just look at ZA, it will show icons for your active programs. MSN IM, Windows Update, NAV are all things that will send and receive in the background.
