(DSL) Internet bogs down; I reconnect and it is fine

I'm trying to figure out why my DSL connection gets slow. And it doesn't have to be on all day to do this. I connect with Winpoet 2.1 to a Zyxel 642M dsl modem. Pages sometimes take forever to load unless I close Winpoet and re-connect. Then it runs fine. But sometimes it seems as if only closing the browser and re-opening does the trick. Running IE 5.5 on win98.

So not saure if it is the ISP, the modem, or IE. Any ideas?

Yes, when it runs well, it is 21 times a 56k modem...when it doesn't it is 4 or 5 times as fast as 56k modem.

Your settings may need tweaking. Over at dslreports.com, click the community and forums section, and go to Broadband tweaks. There is a "faq" section, and some info on dhcp and TCP/IP. Bogging down is a regular but easily fixable exercise (usually ).

Might also get DrTCP (free) and do some tinkering. Read about it here. Winpoet can be tricky, though.

Before using it, run the Tweaks Test from the DSLR Tools. It will tell you the current RWIN setting (probably 65+). You'll want to drop this to 17424 (can be adjusted upwards later if need be) if you get DRTCP and set the MaxMtu to 1492(always leave at 1492!!)

This should give you a base to work from.
