Black Ice is highly over rated and more of a detection system than a firewall. ZoneAlarm is good, Outpost isn't bad, but I went back to ZA until it matures a bit (still needs a bit of work). If you want hardware, look at either a Linksys or SMC Barricade router.

Go here: www.grc.com and read what Mr. Gibson has to say about Black Ice and others. Seems ZoneAlarm's the way to go. Also, run his great diagnostics to test your current firewall.

I was a fan of ZoneAlarm.
Currently use Tiny Personal Firewall, and find it a lot better then ZA. http://www.tinysoftware.com/

We only use Tiny to stop rogue connections going out... smoothwall stops most of the stuff that trys to get in... hehe!

Just make sure of one thing, don't buy ZoneAlarm. The free version will do fine. I use a router and ZoneAlarm. The router for incoming baddies, ZA for outgoing.

I have used ZA, ZA Pro, and Norton. A hardware firewall is far superior in both protection from incoming threats and ease of use. Once set up it is carefree and doesn't slow down the system or cause problems on the network. IMHO a router or similar device is the way to go. Also, a router can be had for less than the price of Norton Firewall!
