Will Internet Connection work?
I don't really know what i'm doing here. I have a d-link internet gateway. it's primarily designed for cable and dsl modems. unfortunately, i live in the boondocks, and cannot get cable or dsl. i can hook up a serial modem to the gatway, and i should be able to share the connection, right? it has a serial port, so i know the modem will hook up. i don't know how i would setup the connection. here is my current network configuration:
my windows 2000 machine has a modem. i'm currently the only one that can connect to the interent. my IP is 198.168.0.2 my brothers both have windows me. they do not have any connection to the outised world whatsoever (but they potentially can since they are hooked up to the gateway). their IP's are 198.168.0.3 and .4 We are all hooked up to the gateway (it also has a four port hub). the gateway automatically assigns itself the IP 198.168.0.1 Right now if i try to share my internet connection, it sets my IP to 198.168.0.1, which confilicts with the gateway. so, sharing doesn't work too well. if i get an external modem and hook it up to the gateway, how would the sharing work? would any computer be able to get the modem to dial? how would the computers make the modem dail the connection in the first place?

Hey Homer15,
Make sure both ME machines have different names in the Identification section in Networking. Create a Workgroup on the Win 2K machine and make the two ME machines part of the Workgroup. Did you assign the IP's or did the gateway do it? If you assigned them try using 10.0.0.3 on the Win 2K and 10.0.0.4 and 10.0.0.5 on the two ME machines. I am not familiar with ME, but make sure you have the TCP/IP protocol and Client for Microsoft Networks installed on ALL machines. Client for MS Networks must be the primary network logon. |

i manually assigned IP's based on the range that the gateway starts with. all of the computers are completely unique, and they are all part of the HOME workgroup. i have to configure the gateway IP as the default gateway on each machine, right?
Does anyone have any idea how you would start the modem up? i have no idea, yet. Does the computer itself tell it to dial, or do you touch the modem, or what? |

Which DLink router are u using? Are you sure the serial port is designed to take a modem? Usually a serial port on a router is a debug port. Check support site with your dlink model number before you attempt the connection.

modem share
I share the dialup modem 56k with win98se & I'm running winxp. pretty much same way win2k. Sharing files & folders/drives are one thing, getting that darn modem protocols to click is another. If you can share files between boxs then you have the workgroups & names & clients strait. Now for the binding to the protcol. I use AllAboard as the software & netbui as the protocol. You can get it here http://tucows.arctic.net/share95.html
