usb vs nic card

I currently have a usb connection for my cable modem. My speeds are quite good 2000-3000 kb/s. Would I gain anything by switching to nic card? I may network this connection in the future and realize the nic will be the way to go. I've read elsewhere that the usb will slow you down. True? Or is it so little that is won't make a difference?

the maximum bandwidth of a USB port is 12 Mbps, so, although your internet will never go faster than that, if you run a standard 10/100 megabit network in the future, you are obviously limited to 12 megabit on that PC with the USB NIC.
