Comcast Online Subscribers: Have You Gotten the Shaft Yet??

Well, it certainly didn't take long for Comcast to start f***ing it's customers over after the death of Excite@home now did it!
I have Cable Modem service through Comcast in Michigan and they just raised my monthly fee by $5. I was wondering if Comcast has done the same to their customers in other parts of the country as well.
I'm considering switching to DSL but I can't find out how far I live from a Central Office to determine how fast my connection would be. The damn Phone Company says they "Can't determine my connection speed until I actually get hooked up", which will require a one year commitment up front!

What a crock!!
I wonder how long it will be before Comcast raises their rates again ?! Who's going to stop them?

Have you checked out www.dslreports.com to see if you can get DSL? It's a good site.

Yes I already know that DSL is available in my area. But I'd like to get an idea on how fast my connection would be before paying for it.

Comcast

DSL Reports can help you out there also. They canm identify the CO involved and show you if they have the necessary equipment for T1 speed DSL. They can also tell you if you are within the distance for higher speed options. I've got DSL but I am not close enough for T1.

Then look into the forums for local speed and user reports for your telco. There's a lot of useful stuff there.

Good luck.

Why all the cuss*** ? Your DSL speed will be determined by distance from local office. 1500 is the max. (I'm getting 1307). The further you are, a "cap" may be put on line in order to maintain sync, etc. I heard where some telcos are starting every new account capped at 384. Then, depending on some factors, if it's stable, may unlock it. Telco won't tell you upfront what speed to expect when signing up, for obvious reasons.

Ameritech residential DSL is capped at 768 down and 128 up no matter how close you are to the switch. If you want faster you pay commercial rates.

Quit your whining - you are still paying about the same for your broadband service as us dialup 56k users pay for service AND a second phone line. Go ask someone at a business sometime how much THEY pay for broadband service (Hint - it's about $200 a month for the same bandwidth and quality of service Comcast gives you now for your $50 or less). If Comcast can't make a profit or at least break even, they can't provide service - the alternative of no available service is kinda grim compared to a $5 a month increase. Bandwidth ain't cheap - you wanna play you gotta pay.
