Hi needgoodies,

The system.ini file normally resides in the c:\Windows directory. Try using the Find feature and do a system search for the system.ini file. It's possible McAfee renamed the file somehow.

Actually, Windows wouldn't run without the system.ini file so it's possible McAfee is just confused.

Tell us what the error says exactly? But let me guess, is it this one?

"Cannot find a device driver file that may be needed to run a windows application. The windows registry or system.ini file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try re-installing that application to replace the missing file."

And then it lists a file name at the end of the error. Tell us what that file is if that indeed is the error.

Well your right Kento, that's exactly what it said and file at the end is
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VSHINIT.VXD....I did a search for the file and it did pop up but as "System" not System.ini does that make a difference?
~Thanks

VSHINIT.VXD is a Mcafee file. Since you have Mcafee installed the error may be because something was messed up during the install of Mcafee. Here's what I would suggest you do. First uninstall Mcafee. Then after doing that delete the VSHINIT registry key. To do that click start--run--type regedit and click ok. Doubleclick on each of these:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD

After you doubleclick on the VXD key you'll see a long list of keys open underneath. Look on the list for VSHINIT then right click on the VSHINIT key and delete it. Then close regedit, restart the computer and then reinstall Mcafee.

Removing the VSHINIT registry key alone without uninstalling Mcafee may remove the startup error message but I believe Mcafee needs that key for it to work properly. Mcafee should recreate that key when you reinstall it.
