IE 6.0: Is it Possible to "Downgrade" to IE 5.5 in XP??

I probably already know the answer to this but here goes: Would it be possible to replace/downgrade IE 6.0 with IE 5.5 in XP?
I don't know about the rest of you out there but I have been getting a ton of "IE Error" windows popping up lately! It's the one asking me if I "want to send a report to Microsoft", which I never do. Of course I have no choice but to close out the window and my pc crashes back to the desktop.
I've been getting these "IE Error" windows ALL THE TIME!
I called my ISP (Comcast Online Cable Modem Service) to see if it might be my connection. But they told that the problem is with IE 6.0 and that my browser might be "corrupted" I tried reinstalling IE 6.0 but I'm still getting Errors galore.
I have a Dual Boot system, running XP on one separate Hard Drive and Win 98 SE on the other. I have IE 5.5 on my 98 Drive and have never gotten one of those IE Errors.
But I prefer to spend most of my time browsing the web on my XP Hard Drive since that's where most of my programs are installed.
But it's gotten so bad lately that I am now doing most of my web browsing on my 98 Drive!

So, would it even be possible to get rid of IE 6.0?? If not, what if I try to install IE 5.5 on XP along with IE 6.0? Is IE 6.0 the only version of IE that's compatible with XP??
I'm afraid to install IE 5.5 on XP without knowing for sure for fear of corrupting even more files!

Thanks in advance.

Send a message via Yahoo to BFD Deadeye
Have you tried opening the 5.5 browser within XP? Don't know if that will even work, but it's worth a try.

I don't think the problem is IE6 itself, I've been running it since the beta version and have yet to receive that error on either of my machines at home or my machine at work. Is there any particular scenario that repeatedly causes the crash?

Yes. It only happens whenever Web Pages/Web Sights are loading. If I'm on a Web Sight and I stay on a Web Page (such as typing the text for this thread in this forum) everything's O.K.
But if I try to switch to a different page or go to a different Web Sight, then the IE Error Window will pop up.
It's gotten to the point where I can predict when the window will pop up before it actually does. Whenever it takes an inordinate amount of time to load a particular page/sight is when the error(s) will occur.
I'm not sure if it might be something simple such as my Internet Options/Advanced settings. But there's so many different items in that menu and I don't have a clue as where to start.
I thought it might be a problem with Java but I installed the "XP Patch" from www.sun.com.

You can get IE 5.5 SP2 off of www.cnet.com it will tell you if it is compatible. You have to search in the downloads section.

I don't think it will allow you to install an older version of IE. If you're not sure if it's something in the internet options section, copy down your current settings, then restore defaults to see if it gets better.

I don't think you can install it over 6.0. If it doesn't work you can get 6.0 from the same website. It does say it is compatible with XP but if it will work with no problems I don't know I have been using 6.0 since it came out and I haven't had any problems. At work here we have all types of OS's from 98SE,2000, and XP. I believe everyone here is using 6.0.

Yeah, I tried installing IE 5.5 but XP/IE would not allow me to install "an older browser".
I changed my Internet Option settings back to default but my pc is still crashing.
Is there no "Internet Tools" within XP that would allow me to attempt to "Repair" 6.0??

Hal, I am running IE6 at work. I run Outlook Express from its own icon. Whenever I load Outlook Express it will load, but I an be sure that as soon as I log off Outlook Express I will the exact error message referenced. No matter what I answer to the "report to microsoft" message, IE will just open. It's extremely annoying.

Remove IE6

Scanner,

Here is a link that describes how to remove IE6. Then you should be able to install IE5.5
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/internet_explorer.htm

Good luck.

You could always install a different browser (Opera, Netscape, or Mozilla).

Yeah I installed Opera but sometimes it loads certain pages very slow.
It's advertised as "the fastest browser on the web" but depending on the web sight, IE is usually quicker.

Thanks for the link Old Man but I don't have a "setup.exe" in my IE Folder that is mentionmed in the directions for removing IE 6.0 in XP. And the other link from Microsoft's Database doesn't give full directions on removing 6.0 from XP.

I just talked to a friend from work who also has Comcast Service. He also said that he has been getting a ton of errors as well! He's running Win 98. If I was also getting errors with IE 5.5/Win 98 then I would definitly suspect a problem with Comcast but, as I said in my original post, I've had no problems with it. I wonder what the chances of my friend having a corrupt Browser as well...

Comcast Tech Support said that they have not had any complaints about IE 6.0 and crashing.

I don't know what the hell to do next....
