For overall speed cable is faster "if" you are the only one on, the more of your neighbors that get it and are on, the slower you will go. DSL is slower but constant. It would depend on the availability and your usage as to which is better for you.

It really depends on the service in your area. When I signed up for Adelphia cable for home use, I inquired as to the bandwidth sharing problems referred to by wedor. Adelphia claims those technical problems have been solved as their network is all fiber optic now and to use their words, "they don't oversell the area". They were offering a 6 mos. trial use for $19.95 per month so I said "what the heck" and tried it. It works great in my area and I haven't noticed any slow downs, even in peak periods.
DSL in theory works great too but lately I've been reading how DSL is becoming less and less reliable. Last week, Verizon had a switch that was down and DSL was down over a wide area, inlcuding my office and my wife's work. It was down for about a day. In fairness, technical problems can strike cable too. Bottom line is I guess it all depends on the service provider in your area. Most are offering a "trial use" so you might want to take 'em up on their offer.
