CRASH Modem probs

At the moment with my new motherboard & processor i cant use my old modem, it has weird prongs & so wont fit into a PCI slot, though still 56kb, im borrowing my m8s external one which is also 56kb but its only connecting at 11kb, how do you connect faster, i tried the control panel thing but the box where it says "conect only at ..." is grayed out any other ideas??? Oh yeah & im ordering a new modem & i was wondering whats the difference between a 7 pounds one & a 30 pounds one if theyre both 56 kb thx
