"Common Name" in IE 6.0 keeps coming back!
Upgraded one of my 4 pc's at home to IE 6.0 and noticed IE 6.0 has a command line next to the address line called "Common Name". I really don't want this there, I only want the address line. No problem I thought, I'll just go to: View>Toolbars and uncheck "Common Name". I did and it went away. However, it comes back when I restart IE. What's up? How do I get rid of it for good?

Common Name
LawyerRon,
Common Name is basically spyware. You should be able to remove it by going to Control Panels > Add Remove Programs (I think it was there) but if not, AdAware from www.lavasoft.de removes it very effectively. Good luck. The Old Man |

Did you get rid of it? If add/remove didn't remove it a user on another board posted the following which was emailed to him by the makers of Common Name...
Unfortunately, if you have attempted to delete the CommonName folder or attempted to un-install with an Explorer window open, you will not be able to un-install completely the CommonName application. To complete the un-install, please follow these instructions - On earlier versions of CommonName 1. Restart your PC 2. YOU MUST CLOSE DOWN ALL BROWSERS AND APPLICATIONS THAT MAYBE OPEN, INCLUDING WINDOWS EXPLORER. 3. Click on the Start Button 4. Select 'Find File/Folder' or 'Search File/Folder' depending which version of Windows you running. (Do not use My Computer) 5. Type in 'CommonName' and click on Find/Search 6. Delete every file on the results list CommonName should now be completely removed from your PC If an Explorer Window is still open, one or two files may not be deleted. If so, please follow these instructions - 1. Press the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys - if you use Win NT/2000 you must also click 'Task Manager' and click the 'Processes' Tab. 2. Select 'Cnbabe.exe' or 'CNDesk.exe' from the list (depending on the version you have installed) 3. Click 'End Task' for Win 95/98/ME or 'End Process' for Win NT/2000 4. Close down the task manager and repeat step 6 above. 5. You should now be able to delete the remaining files One all of these files have been deleted, Browser Agent will still appear in the ADD/REMOVE programs, even though it has been fully removed. On earlier versions of CommonName (Versions 2.30+) YOU MUST CLOSE DOWN ALL BROWSERS AND APPLICATIONS THAT MAYBE OPEN, INCLUDING WINDOWS EXPLORER. 1) Click on Start 2) Click on Programs 3) Click on Accessories 4) Click on Command Prompt. This will bring up the Command Prompt Window. 5) At the prompt type "cd\" (without the quotes) 6) Hit Enter. 7) Type "CD Program Files\CommonName\Toolbar" 8) Hit Enter. 9) Type "Del BabeIE.dll" 10) Hit Enter 11) Type "Del CnbarIE.dll" 12) Hit Enter 13) Close the Command Prompt window. 14) You will now be able to delete the contents of the CommonName Folder as detailed before. |

Sorry I didn't post back with the results. Yes, OldMan's suggestion did the trick. I removed Common Name in Add/Remove programs. It was on one of my kid's computers and I actually thought it was a part of the IE 6.0 upgrade as I've never seen it before.
