How to increase traffic on a site?

Now that the airlines have ceased paying any commission
as of a few days ago, I urgently need to revive the web site that
was half heartedly created for my wifes travel agency.
The main thing that concerns me is how to increase
the traffic drawn to the site. We have had very few inquiries
from the site since it was put up. I hear stories of other
small travel agencies who are getting a lot of visitors.
What are they doing? I am not talking about site content
but how to be found, or seen, by people looking for a vacation.
Any info or ideas will be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Chris.

You need to get a good submission program like SubmitWolf and then use all the keywords you can thing of.

Add your site to search engines (go to www.submit-it.com) , and use meta tags to add keywords and description to your site pages.

Things like this just take work. Some search engines like Google really don't put much emphasis on Metatags. They tend to focus on page titles and content. The major problem that you will have is that there a lot of travel agencies out there competing for positions in Search Engines. It will be hard to get some good placement unless you spend some bucks.

It is certainly not a lost cause but a difficult one. I would carefully review your site. Then review some of the competitors sites. See what you do better. See what they do better. Make sure that there is some reason for people to use your site instead of the others. Then let others look at your site and see what they think. I will be glad to look it over if you want.

aym-7 hit the nail on the head. Meta-Tags are the most important thing for getting search hits. If you have a lot of descriptive tags in your html code search engines will find them.

Read this article on search engine submission tips. Here is a quote from their tips:
Quote:
Meta tags are what many web designers mistakenly assume are the "secret" to propelling their web pages to the top of the rankings. However, not all search engines read meta tags. In addition, those that do read meta tags may chose to weight them differently. Overall, meta tags can be part of the ranking recipe, but they are not necessarily the secret ingredient.
It really depends on the search engine. Goggle really could care less about Metatags. As an example, type in pc mech in the Google search. Here is what you come up with. PC Mechanic at No. 1. Now let's look at the Meta-tags on the PCMech site. Here they are
PHP Code:
<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>P C  M E C H A N I C</TITLE>
<
meta NAME="description" content="">
<
meta NAME="keywords" content=""
You can test that on other searches but Google in this case took the page title and the first paragraph on the page to give this info. Now if we look at a search engine like Alta-Vista, it is a little different. PCMech is now 6th because Alta-Vista does use metatags. The point is that meta-tags are a bit overated but still used by some search engines.

Thanks guys- just a quick reply- more later.
Gave it some thought over the w/end. The whole site is too " me too" I need to find some niche to promote. Villas in Tahiti,
nudist holidays in the Everglades, or something !
Take a look at the site . Very little time or money spent on it,
a sure recipe for mediocrity.

Thanks,
