I'm connected, but no websites come up
Hi,
I'm using IE6, 56K dialup, win98se and was having some problems before when on the internet I would click on a site either in favorites or just a link on a webpage and it wouldn't do anything, so I uninistalled IE and installed it again. However, now I can't get any website on my screen. It just goes to that screen where it says it can't find the website and says to hit the refresh button. I believe I'm connected because when I click on the two green flashing computers on the bottom right of the screen, it says I'm connected. I also reinstalled my ISP software. I have a feeling it may have something to do with my network settings. I use a crossover cable hooked up to two computers both on win98. Each has its own modem. The other computer still works good on the internet, which is good, but I'd really like to get my other one working again. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could start troubleshooting? Thanks a lot. Pete |

Are you saying that you want both to dial in at same time? Do you have two phone lines (required for both to dial at same time)? If just one line, have you set them up in a Gateway/client configuration? Click tools, internet options, security tab, also connections tab. How are they set up?

I only have one phone line, but use a kind of Y splitter for the two modems to connect to. So basically I can just have one computer connected at one time.
I did check some of my settings in the tools section of IE. What I tried to do was set the settings of the one that isn't working right to the same settings as the one that is working right, but I must still be missing something. Its strange because when I do connect to the internet with the computer that isn't working right, on the bottom right of the screen it says "local intranet" instead of "internet" I'm not sure if this is supposed to be saying that or not. If I go to tools, internet options, security, the internet symbol is highlighted. I thought maybe that was the problem, but it doesn't seem like it. |

On the browser go Tools>Internet Options>Connections and run the setup wizard

Sorry everyone, in tools, connections, settings I the box that says "use proxy server" was checked. I'm not sure what a proxy server is, but that was the one that I overlooked when checking it all out, and noticed it wasn't checked on the computer that was working.
So its working fine now, thanks. |

A proxy server is a local program that runs in conjunction with your browser. Typically these are cookie smashing and ad blocking add ons. If you have a proxy server specified in your browser options, you have to have that proxy program running when you use the internet or you will get the errors you encountered.
