AOL Browser Problem
Hey everyone,
a friend of mine is having a problem with browsing the internet using AOL. he is able to connect his computer to AOL's network, and he can check his mail and chat and talk to people, but whenever he tries to go to a web site, he gets an 'unable to display page' error message. he gets the same message if he tries to use the internet explorer while connected to AOL. he uninstalled and reinstalled AOL a few times, but this did not repair the error. he was on the phone with AOL for a while yesterday, and they only thing that they could suggest was that he update his internet explorer to 6.0, but he can't do that since he can't browse the internet. i had all of the files necessary to install ie6 (from when i upgraded), but when we try to run the installation, we get an error message saying: he has a dell, and it came with a jillion cd's, but none of them actually appear to have windows or ieX on them. if the master browser is a problem, how would i go about repairing that? or does anyone else have any suggestions?

I had the same problem (and so did my friend) when I used aol on my older machine. We found the problem to be an older winsock version on our computers. We just got an updated winsock version and replaced the old version with the new one. I forget how u can get a newer version, i think i got it from a friend who had an up-2-date version. good luck.

thanks. do you mean an up to date version of AOL? because he's using 7.0, and that's as up to date as it can get.
i had this problem when i was using AOL too, but that was like 3 years ago, and i simply stopped using the computer (not because of the internet connection, but because the computer was a useless piece of garbage). so, i didn't figure out a way to fix the problem. |

Recreating the aol adapter has worked for many with your same type of problem with aol. The directions below were taken from another board I visit and i've seen it work a few times:
1) Log Off AOL. You can't do this while you are online with the service 2) Close America Online. 3) Go to the Start button, select Settings, then Control Panel 4) Find the Network Icon and double click on it to open the Network settings window 5) Scroll through the list of Network adapters until you find the AOL adapter, then click on it ONCE to highlight it 6) Click the REMOVE button to delete the AOL adapter 7) Close the Network window, and any other windows you have open 8) Go to Start, then shutdown the PC 9) Reboot the system and open AOL again from the menu or the AOL icon on your desktop 10) Log back on to America Online. The adapter will "rebuild" itself when you restart AOL |
