Question Getting File Sharing Programs To Work On A Network

I'm trying to get some programs running through a firewall at school. I have the IP adress for it and I've tried configuring the various programs but none of them seem to work. I'm having problems becaus I'm trying to go through both the firewall and and LAN and I don't really know what I'm doing. Internet explorer is set up on Port 80 but my FTP program is set up on Port 20. What port should I be using. I know I need to connect to a proxy to get online but is that to do with the LAN or the firewall? Does anyone have any experience using mIRC through a firewall?

Thanks in advance.
