Thanks Shecky, I've been using them since October and their service is nothing less than great. I highly recommend them for anyone looking for a web host.

I've been with them about a year. I might have even recommended them to Dr. Z. I can't remember but I think that someone had recommended them over here to me. It's funny how good word of mouth advertising is. Annette and co. will take good care of you. Their support forum is also a great one.

I dont mean to intrude on this love-fest but isn't that expensive? 5 email addresses? with a 1GB transfer??

I have some of my domains on www.3-95.com / www.dixiesys.com and it is awesome. I use it mainly for IMAP, and support & service are par excellence.

Oh yeah the aforementioned has everything hostingmatters has plus more space and bandwidth for $3.95/mth

It may be, Statica. I am a reseller so that I only pay $3.00. You also can't resell their plans at dixiesys. On a side note, that dixiesys site has to be one of the worst looking ones that I have ever seen. There is no shell access either. I can SSH into my site at HM.

having been thru a number of webhosts over the years, I can say from personal experience that HM seems to be excellent, if for no other reason than thier service/helpdesk, which answered a few issues i had within hours of sending email (at 2 AM no less).

What about PowWeb ? $7.77 a month sure seems like a good deal for 10 email accounts, and 10GB transfer. I'm seriously thinking about going with them. Anybody tried em out?

I wouldnt go with anyone who would want a yearly contract, unless you've tried them before. PowWeb will give u @ 7.77 on a yearly basis.

Yeah, not having shell is a problem, but there are ways around it, on the other hand, I would be worried if it is was a cheap host that had shell access (cheap host=beginners, learners etc or admin using the hosting business as a startup/part time). In any event, I have yet to find anything that I cant do in a webhost without shell. Dixiesys, has been amazing for techsupport, at outrageous hours... often times going beyond what their advertised features are. And mairving they do have reseller accnts .. works out quite cheap for me (dont pay anything on my accnt) - $10/month/10-domains ..

Aletia http://aletiahosting.com/ is quite featured as well .. but from what I've heard their support is painful.

Again, you could find loads of featured hosting for quite cheap .. for me finding one with IMAP was the key .. I use my host mostly for mail.. I cant stand that half-@$$ed POP!!

I've also had no bad experiences from www.extremepresence.com in over 6 months now. 11 bucks for 6 gigs of transfer, 75 megs, etc.

I don't have IMAP mail, but I do continue to pay for hosting for the same reason that Statica does, just to have my own configurable mail server (that's filtered before it gets to me ).

We have been with Webaxxs for about 5 years now, no problems, excellent support, excellent service, and VERY generous space quotas. For $15.95 a month we get shell access, 400 megs space, 8 gigs traffic, 30 pop boxes, and more. They are resellers for OLM - and their plans are actually better than if you went direct to OLM........and if you call for support (toll free) you are actually speaking to OLM.

mairving: Yeah, I believe it was you who recommended them a while back. Thanks!

I also have a site hosted with 3-95.com, and the service and hosting is pretty good for $3.95 a month, but I would still stick with HM for bigger sites.

Dr. Z, I didn't say that so that I would get any credit for it. I just think that word of mouth advertising can be very effective. It is also good to see that HM is still be recommended and loved by people a year or so apart. It is very difficult to grow a company and still keep up with support.

Statica, first you help teach me about what to do in the shell in Linux, then you tell me I don't need it. I might consider hosting an account or two in the future with dixiesys since I trust your judgement. I forgot to look but do they have MySQL on their accounts? Aletia, I think has encountered some growth problems and from what I hear and lost quite a few accounts because of it.

Anyway, no doubt there are a lot of good hosts out there. I just happen to know of the one that I use.

LOL Mairving .. I didnt teach you anything, just got along with you at laughing at windoze .
Actually I think I'd run a "need IMAP .. need IMAP" type thread by here, and one of the links you'd stated, had this in there .. so you get credit for it as well.
Yeah they do have MySQL (else I wouldnt be there, helps my webmail), as well as PHP-admin.

By the way, shell access for a webhost is overrated, as long as you've got cgi-bin .. just install a php/cgi filemanager .. most decent ones have a (command-execute facility gossamer-threads.com is a good one). I agree, shell access is great if you can get it with cron-jobs and the like and run a largish site.

for you hosting seekers, what you should look for in a webhost, should also include a good control panel .. most hosts out there, dont make the investment for a good control panel.

I know, just wanted to thank you for mentioning it. Probably wouldn't have found the service if not for your link.

Well, okay I haven't learned much from Statica but I did learn a lot from an old member called Ex-Static Cling. It would be difficult for me to do a site with a database without having shell access. I generally build my site on my local webserver were I have given myself shell access. Then when I am finished, I dump the database and tar.gz everything up and ftp it to the server, then SSH in a untar gunzip the files, import the database, change a constant or a permission or two and I am done. I really never cared much about using PHPMyAdmin myself. I generally just preferred to use MySQL from the > prompt. Hosting Matters uses Cpanel which is pretty good until it is updated then things can kind of get broken a bit.

Dr. Z, I tried to find the original link that I found HM from but couldn't. Oh yeah, I also meant to tell you that I saw a little blurb about your site in Maximum PC Mag. Congrats.

I've been with them for about 6 months, excellent services. They just upgraded actually, 100 pop3's, 200mb, 12gb transfer. I haven't had any downtime at all.
