SETTING UP A ROUTER (Netopia R6100)

Hi

I need help setting up a netopia r6100 ADSL router at home. I am using a dell 933 with 384MB of ram, 60GB, a clone 850MHZ 128MB 40GB and a compaq 333MHZ, 128MB, 10GB my isp is bellsouth (fastaccess). I think i have done everything correct according to the netopia manual. I have also followed instruction from bellsouth's tech support. It seems the router is connecting, however I can not get the browser to connect to a site. Once i am connected can someone suggest how i can share this ADSL line. Below are a few screen shots of the router and how i plan to layout my network. any input would be helpful.

thanks

Hi Patsy404,

I can't view the attachments (Yahoo says they are unavailable) but how did you set the computers TCP/IP properties? Do they et their IP addresses through DHCP? or did you assign IP addresses? If you assigned IP's, you will need to specify the internal IP address of the Netopia as the gateway address. If you did dynamic IP's you may have a DHCP issue. Post back and someone will help.

Good Luck.

If you copy the URL for the attachments and paste them in your browser, you will be able to see the GIF files on geocities.com.

Sorry about the attachements. no i did not assign IP Addresses and I do believe I am using DHCP. How do I identify the internal IP address? I know for cerntain I am not using a static IP so i do believe I am using a dynamic IP.

I have included some of the information conatined in the attachements.

ROUTER SETTINGS:
Ethernet IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Ethernet Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Domain Name: Bellsouth.net
Primary Domain Name Server: 205.152.45.254
Secondary Domain Name Server: 205.152.0.5
Default Gateway: 127.0.0.2
IP Address Serving: On (is this turning DHCP on?)
Number of Client IP Addresses: 100
1st Client Address: 192.168.1.100

Setting up router

Patsy404,

I shouyld have looked at the attachments last night. Too tired, I guess.

You say the router appears to be connecting. What indication do oyu have that it is connected. In the snippet of log you sent, it shows an authentication failure then a restart but the log does not go far enough to determine if it is actually connected.

What type of connection do you have? ADSL, SDSL, IDSL and is it using PPPoE? You've specified in the profile it is a PPP connection. That is not the same as PPPoE.

All the other info you sent on the computers appears to be correct. They are gertting their IP's and gateway from the router correctly which reinforces, in my mind at least, that you may not have an actual connection.

Post back.

This is the information which leads me to think the router is connecting with the ISP:

3/27/02 23:03:39 >> WAN: Data Link activated at 1472 / 256 Kbps (rx/tx)
3/27/02 21:49:54 RFC1483-1 up

I have ADSL. Normally I would use PPPoE to connect to the ISP using the Speed Touch Home ethernet modem. I was uncertain about PPP & PPPoE.

For some reason I feel the same way about the router actually connecting. I notice after connecting the remote IP is still set to 0.0.0.0

I thought this would be easy but I may have to hire someone to configure this thing.

You shouldn't need to hire someone to do this. It IS supposed to be easy. I looked at the Netopia site and found the folowing for the 9100 router. Their docs don't seem to be organized too well and I couldn't find much for the 6100. There may be some differences but try this.
================
Router Configuration:

From the Main Menu, go to Easy Setup.
Toggle Enable PPP over Ethernet to On with your tab key and hit Return/Enter. Select Next Screen to continue.
Verify that the Remote IP Address is set to 127.0.0.2.
Enter the Send User Name and Send Password used to authenicate your connection under PPP Authentication. Select Next Screen to continue.
The Ethernet IP Address of you router can either be changed to reflect an IP address on a pre-configured network, or you can use the default private IP subnet of 192.168.1.0 for your network, and leave your router at the Ethernet IP Address of 192.168.1.1 with an Ethernet Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0.
Enter the two DNS IP Addresses provided by your ISP in the fields Primary Domain Name Server and Secondary Domain Name Server.
Your Default IP Gateway should be set to 127.0.0.2.
Finally, IP Address Serving is your DHCP option. By default, your router is configured as a DHCP server serving 100 client IP addresses starting at 192.168.1.100. If you do not want your router to be a DHCP server, or if you already have a DHCP server on your network, toggle IP Address Serving to Off with your tab key and hit Return/Enter. If you want your router to be a DHCP server, but you are not using the private IP subnet of 192.168.1.0 on your network, you will need to change the 1st Client Address to an IP address on your pre-configured network.
To complete your configuration, select Next Screen, and Restart Device.
Conclusion:

Once your router has restarted, you can test your PPP connection by selecting Quick Menus, Connection Profiles, Establish WAN Connection, and then the profile you just configured. If you connect successfully, you will see your profile listed under Current WAN Connection Status in your router's Quick View screen (located from the Main Menu). The NAT IP address listed to the far right of your Profile Nameis the IP address you have been assigned by your ISP. If you need further assistance troubleshooting your PPPoE connection, please see the following Netopia Technote:
===================

Ignore the DHCP part. You have that set up correctly. Just try the connection type changes.

Good luck.

patsy404,

I found the R6100 manual on the Netopia site. To do ADSL PPPoE, you specify RFC1483 for the Data Link Encapsulation. On the next screen, leave the local WAN IP address set to 0's to enable your ISP to supply the address. Set the authentication to PAP and fill in the user name and password.

Post back with the results.
