proxy server

I have a PC that i want to set up as a Proxy server so that my 3 other PC's can share Internet access as well. The problem is the would be proxy server PC is one of the PC's plugged into a hub for the cable modem (i'm sharing the cable modem with my 2 roommates, who each has a PC- total 3 computers, 3 IP's sharing the cable modem ). Is it possible to set up my PC as a Proxy server for my 3 pc's? This sounds dumb, but i can't figure out where i will be plugging in the network cable from the would be Proxy server if it's already plugged into the cable modem hub? Help!

You will need another NIC on your proxy server. The simplest way to do it is to something like this

                         +--NIC1---->cable modem
PROXY SERVER -|
                         +--NIC2----> Hub ----> to other PCs

Just to tag on a note.. if you havent already bought the h/w like hub/NICs etc etc... you could get yourself a multipleport router instead of a hub; that way you wouldnt need a proxy server but would have increased security and your machine wouldnt have to be on whenever some1 else needs to use the internet...

then it would be:

cable modem ---> router
                          +-->PC1
                          +-->PC2
                          +-->PC3

Cool Thanks, Statica.

Thanks Statica for all your help. Although i already bought the hub which is a mistake, i think i'll go for the multipleport router which would be the least amount of work. Thanks, again.

And definetly go with LinkSys. They seem to be the most troublesome these days.

I am getting DSL soon and had been planning to set up a computer as a proxy server on the pattern Statica outlined, but the cost of a router is so low, and the benefits so great, I can't see any reason not to buy a router instead.
