Help please.
I connect to the internet via cable. I am only getting occasional connection right now (very occasional). In calls to my ISP tech support, I get told that the modem and my NIC are performing fine and that the problem is somewhere in my system. One tech suggested that the problem may be a corrupted Winsock. Is there a way to check this and/or fix it without having to do a full reinstall of my OS (Win98)? Thanks |

Hi tpascal,
I had the same problems which you are describing. What I did was put the modem into a different PCI slot on my motherboard and it solved the problem. I'm not sure about Winsock but I thought it was only in WIN95. |

Winsock is used by all versions of Windows. If the tech is sure everything is ok on their end (yeah right) the best way to try to fix it is rebuild your networking. Uninstall the nic from device manager and go into Networks and remove all components, shut down and remove the nic from the machine. Restart and run some kind of registry cleaner. Shut down and reinstall the nic and reinstall the network components.
