Strange problem won't go away...

Ok, this is gonna be longwinded, but here goes:

I have 3 computers on a network, 2 with win 2k and one with win 98 SE, and using a LinkSys router/hub with my cable modem. I have had this setup of a year now, when 2 weeks ago I suddenly ran into a problem.

My connection became really slow on all computers, dropping from 1.3 Mbps to .083 Mpbs on average. If I shut down my computers and do a "power cycle" on the cable modem (unplug, wait for 30 seconds, then plug in and restart computers), then my connection will be as fast as it's usual self--only for about 20 min to half an hour. Then, it always drops to slow again. I called my ISP, but they said that they don't deal with routers. When I plug my cable modem directly to one computer, I don't have the problem.

I thought the router might be fried so I bought a new one, but I still have the same problem.

Any thoughts?

Did you try getting DSL?

and you also mentioned you unplug the router and plug it back in, why dont you take your router out for an hour or 2 and see how it runs from there.

I know that, but thats just for one computer, same thing with mine, on one computer its fine but it tends to get too much for Cable modems on a network, give it a try it might even work.

Is one of the computers running kazaa or some other filesharing program? When my brother is uploading a lot of stuff our download speed will go from 2 Mbps to about 250 kbps.

Did you change/install anything in the computers 2 weeks ago?

Cool

I don't have a solution but I had same problem once. Mine would slow down and eventually quit accessing the net. Like you, powering off the router and PC's would resolve the problem for a period of time.

Mine happened when my provider was switching over from Excite@home to AT&T. Problem cleared up after about three weeks.

Don't know if this applies in your case or not.

Good Luck

Chas
