Sometime this week I am getting rid of my dialup and getting DSL. Are there better than other DSL modems and router boxes? I will be hooking two pc's up to this internet. These are not yet networked together. Phone company who is the internet provider here has priced dsl modems at $170. Seems kind of high to me. I ask the manager there what brand they are and he didnt remember so I figure he has upped the price to much. Are line filters and wall filters needed for this? They are selling those at $15 too. Any help on a good brand to get would help me alot . And what brands to stay away form. I will be running speeds at around 128kbps.

First, don't let them sucker you with a USB modem.
Second, you can get line filters a lot cheaper at Radio Shack and on-line. Third, I've seen prices from $100-$200 if you buy from your provider. If you can find out what modem standard they are using, you can buy you own a lot cheaper. Forth, Linksys or Netgear are both great and affordable routers. I have the Linksys BEFSR81 and really like it. It has PPPoE built into it so you don't need to install your ISP's PPPoE client bloatware. -Craig |

Be advised to use the modem provided if going with telco dsl. Most are around $100 - insist on external (non-usb). If you're going through AOL for dsl, I'll pray for 'ya.
![]() Filters come with the package. Stay in touch as you may have some issues to deal with. I spend too many hours a day troubleshooting that stuff and will help, if possible.
