Security Update March 28, 02

I keep getting this auto update from Microsoft Update to install Critical Update, Security Update March 28, 2002 for Internet Explorer version 6,0,2714,400. (also known as file: Q319182.EXE)
I tried to install it 16 times and it says: "failed to install".

Anyone else have this problem?

please advise,

thanks,

God Bless,

Robert

Robert,

I have not had any problems with windows update not installing, but in reality, you don't need or want most of these updates. I disabled the automatic update when windows update automatically updated my modem driver to one for a modem I do not have. Luckily with XP you can revert back to your older driver. You can read what these updates do and decide for yourself if you really need it. Many are for people running servers and such. I know this really doesn't answer your question exactly, but if you go into Control Panel, then Performance and Maintenance then See basic information about your computer if you are using the XP control panel (System if you are using "classic"), then click the Automatic Updates tab. Here I would change it to "Notify me before downloading" ...or "Turn off automatic updating." At least you won't get the message to install that update anymore.

Dave, thanks for the reply.
I guess I can turn auto update off. I am curious to why some of these updates won't install whether I need them or not.

thanks again,

God Bless,

Robert

Usually when I get these messages, If I clear out the "Windows Updates Setup Files" Folder, it will work the next time I try.

Robert,

I went to windows update and reviewed this particular update. On second thought, this one looks like one you should have to protect your computer from cookie generated problems.

I ran the update and it installed with no problems. I rebooted as instructed and everything is fine. The only problem I seem to remember with windows updates was when I installed a system update and left my Norton Anti-virus auto protect on. I always right click the tray icon and disable auto protect before downloading and installing these updates. You might try that, and also doing a CTRL-ALT-Delete and shutting down unnecessary programs and services before running the update again. I also think there is a Windows update history folder. Maybe there is a file there that thinks you have already successfully installed the update. You could probably delete this folder and start WU over. I believe the WU folder is in the Program files folder.

Orcmonkey, Dave, thanks for your replies.
I will look for the folders mentioned, It is "safe" to delete these items in folder? Do you just delete the entire windows "update"
folder?

please advise,

God Bless,

Robert

Leave the folder, but delete the contents, These are just temporary installers, perfectly safe to delete.
