SPyware alert
Anyone who loads a demo should run an ad-aware scan after. I found about 11 pieces after loading the 'Freedom Force' demo on.
Lots of Gator and webhancer stuff. Other spyware that theyre coming out with uses your computer like a supernode. So youre slowing down while they use your computer to speed their network up. I noticed this awhile back when my cable modem activity light was constant. Kind of like when downloading 15 files off of filesharing sites, only I wasnt downloading squat at the time. I think I finally cured it by cleaning most of the Spyware out. I always leave a certain 7 pieces of spyware in so my P2p still functions. But the webhancer and Gator are not welcome in my box!!!If your bogging down it might be a spyware infestation. http://salon.com/tech/feature/2002/0...are/index.html |

now that I think about it more, I think the slowdoen was a program called B3d that the article discusses. I couldnt get it completely out by window washer which I generally do after surfing. Its actually a file in windows explorer. They install it on your hard drive. Im almost positive of this because I remember finding it there.

Salon.com has another interesting story about spyware:
http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/20...are/index.html Also, remember to update your reference file if you are using Ad-Aware. I run it frequently, and I was always clean. I then got the latest reference file, and it found over 200 spyware components on my system! Incredible. It seems like spyware is just like virii now: keep those definition files up to date to catch everything. |
