Can't connect to servers using DMZ Host

I have a Linksys 4 port router, and I have a static IP adress. I want to connect to Half-Life and other such servers so I can play. I am on WinXP Pro using a D-Link 10/100 NIC. I have been on the phone with Linksys, D-Link AND Sierra and no one has a solution that works. I have tried using DMZ Host on my IP address, and specifically opening each port that is required for Half-Life. I am out of ideas, and rather annoyed since the first thing the tech support people do is blame the other company.

Is it possible that I have the wrong kind of RJ 45 cable? The colored ends match up at each end of my cable, but could it still be a crossover cable? If so, is there some kind of adapter to uncross it? Please help, and thank you again.

do you get an error message?
if you are able to browse your network at all, you have the right cable, so count that out.

Well I am on-line with it right now. I think it is a Windows XP Pro problem, since it all happened when I upgraded Home to Pro. Too bad OEM software doesn't get tech support. Thanks for the quick reply though

Not when I try to connect to the WON servers for Half-Life. It just keeps retrying after the time runs out for each try and goes on indefinitely.

I am running Half-Life 1.1.0.9 and Counter-Strike 1.4
All of my drivers are up to date. And I refuse to pay $35 per call to contact Microsoft to get tech support, unless I absolutely have to. The same is true for all of my on-line games, like Wolfenstein. Also, I am unable to obtain authorization over the internet for my student CAD program using C-Dilla. Any other ideas?
