Java or Javascript? I am assuming that you are talking about Javascript since Java, despite being a programming langauge, is not generally one for the web. Javascript is a client-side programming language that is both simple and complex. By client-side, it means that all of the processing is done on the clients (visitors) machine. Langauges like PHP, PERL, ASP are server-side programming languages, which means the processing is done on the server-side. Javascript can be used for pop-up ads, browser detection, form validation, DHTML and plenty of other things. The disadvantage is that the user can turn off Javascript and make all of programming not work. Javascript is most often used internally within a web page but can also be externally linked to a .js file.

I tend to use JS for about 3 or 4 things on a regular basis: Image rollovers, Pop-up windows and browser detection.

I would concentrate more on server-side languages that mariving mentioned (specifically, PHP) since they are usually more useful that JavaScript, which is mainly just used for "special effects".
