Dial-up Speed

I have a 56 K modem and am running Win XP Pro. I regularly connect at 48. On a rare day I get 45.2.
Lately I have been down to 28.8. I have tried all 6 numbers that my ISP has with no improvement. I called them and they cannot help.
Does anyone have any ideas on why connect speed is suddenly down?
Thank You
Phil Morrow

Could be a few things. to fix it.

Phone line quality. if waters got into the box or anything it could've mangled this. (can't help with contacting phone company - i'm in uk)

check ur wire from socket to pc. may have got damaged, losing quality.

check modem drivers. keep them up to date. can sometimes improve speeds by 5kbps. make sure ur xp drivers are ok.

Thanks for your repsonse.
I have new lines per phone company.
I did check the interior lines.
It has been raining these past 4 days. Had not thought about that.
My connect speed right now is back up to 48.
What do you think about going to DSL?
Appreciate the response
Phil

If DSL or cable is available, it's a no brainer. Go for it.
