frustration

"The page cannot be displayed...

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings...."

This is the error message I get time and time again, then I hit the refresh button, and for the most part, the page I want will pop up...

I am using Win98se,IE6.0(I have tried reinstalling 5.5 with tools and it doesn't seem to help)...I am on ADSL so I am even more frustrated because I should be zipping through...my network settings appear to be fine...I came oh so close to formatting the other day but thought I would try this route first...

Anyone have some useful suggestions???
Thanks in advance

same thing happens to me all the time. I am using XP, ie6.0, and i'm on dialup, so i don't think it's anything, except possibly a ie bug, not sure though. I just live with it.

Hi Links2,

Welcome to PC Mechanic!!!

First, I'd say to stay with IE 6. 5.5 was just a beta for V6.x. Second, don't forget that if a server has problems, you'll have problems no matter which setup you run. If there is a lot of traffic, no matter how fast your connection is, it will be slow(er).

If your troubles are with the same sites, then it's probably that site(s). For example, I (and others) always have trouble getting thru to Asus's site. Downloading from them is even more problematic. Other sites, like MSN or Jasc, on the other hand, almost never have problem.

Pick several different sits and test them regularly. If one group of sites (like MSN or Jasc) always work, and others, (insert your problem sites here) don't work too often, then it is the sites. If they ALL always don't work, then you have problems.

HTH

Hi ozzfreak,

I'm afraid that you situation is different...

XP has a know "issue" with The page cannot be displayed error messages. Check out www.techtv.com as I believe they have a recent article on how to help fix the problem.

not site specific

I also seem to be trying to "find" sites alot...and if it doesn't find that site(sites that I go to alot) I will get the error message as well...

As for the initial issue, it is not site specific, it happens with alot of the sites I attempt to go to(not every site but I thinkI would be faily accurate in saying at least 95% of them)...

The www.techtv.com link is from the Screen Savers show and there you will find a patch that corrects DNS errors caching that is present only in Windows 2000 and XP. Windows 98/ME does not have this feature so the patch will not work.

Hi Links2,

Almost sounds like an ISP and or phone line issue. It's about 6 hours past my bed time and I'm not thinking of any good clues right now.... Maybe if I sleep on it...

yes,get some sleep for christ's sake...lol...I need some too...anyways,I have contacted the ISP(Telus support)and they are telling me that the signal they send me and receive is fine and that I probably have a browser issue...they suggested maybe that I try re-installing IE5.5 because that is the browser they have expeienced the least number of issues with...I did that(as I previously mentioned)but to no avail...same issues...so I loaded 6.0 back up...

Morris...thanks for your responses...every angle I will try...

I have checked my settings in the network area and everything seems fine(and was fine with the Telus support staffer)...

Anyways, please do not give up on me as I tend to get to the bottom of this even if I have to rip the rest of the hair from my balding head

hmmm

Well, I decided to give Mozilla a test run and well,so far it is working fine for me...
I have had none of the errors that I encountered with IE...but, I also have Netscape6.2 loaded into my system and have had a few "timed out" errrors with it...anyways,other than not being able to find certain plugins for Mozilla, I kind of like the change...I would still like to figure out IE...
