How to get rid of a virus?
My son has had problems with his computer lately. He has received stacks of emails over the last few weeks. some of them say they have been sent by me or somone else who is on his mail list and they always contain attachments but they have not been sent by me or his other friends. However, although he says he did not open any of them, his computer has slowed almost to a crawl. I ran Nortons 2000 virus utilities on it and it discovered that 40 files were effected with a virus. The program tried to repair the files but could not fix them all so the computer is still as slow as a snail and obviously still has files with virus's. I deleted a couple of files that were effected but now on booting up windows (98) It says that some files are missing. It still runs but still very slow. So what do I do to get rid of the problem. If I reformat the hard disk, will that fix it. None of the virus was found in the BIOS so I am hoping that the problem will go away if I reformat. In the meantime he is still getting dozens of emails like the others with attachments. Does anyone know anthing about this virus and if reformatting the hard disk will fix it up for him.
Thanks in advance for any replies guys.

I would suggest saving any key data, doing a complete F-disk, format, and re-install of Win98. I would not even consider trying to do any more repairs. Sounds like your virus checker isn't doing its job. What antivirus software are you using?

Oh, I just noticed that you are doing Norton 2000. I would make sure that you have the latest and greatest NAV2002 after you re-install Win98 and all of your drivers. Make sure that he updates his virus definitions at least once a week and does full system virus scans at least once a week. Also, make sure that the program is scanning his incoming and outgoing emails. Good luck.

Has you son been playing around with KaZaa. A lot of their files are contaminated. It will do as you say is happening to his computer, slow it to a crawl by filling up the whole hard drive.

If you are going to use a Peer to Peer File Sharing Program (KaZaa, ect) it is important that you have and Anti Virus Program running with up to date definitions. Also, if you are on broadband internet it is wise to use a firewall such as Sygate or Zone Alarm (both free).
You should also set the Anti-Virus Program to Auto-Update everytime you log on and you should regularly scan for virus infections. Also it is a good idea to get a trojan scanner, such as SwatIt (Free) and a Spyware Program such as Adaware (Free) and run these on a regular basis. |

If you suspect your computer has a virus ,shut off the e-mail till you have confirmed the system is clean or have removed the virus. Don't keep running e-mail and spreading the virus.
