Phone jack not even close

Just moved into an apartment that has no convenient phone jack near my computer. Any inexpensive alternative? What's the max distance for a phone line from modem to jack?

I have used 20- or 25-foot extensions with no problems. My computer is not near a convenient phone jack, so I am currently using a 20-foot extension. I got mine at Target; you should be able to pick one up just about anywhere.

Compared to the distance your home is from to TELCO office, any amount of extension you need inside your home is negligible. The real factor is your distance fron the Local Telco CO, that determines your connection speed and quality, so go ahead and use that 50 footer if need be!

If it's possible though, I would try and get the best quality extension you can. I've experienced poor connection speeds with some extensions which I would put down to poor quality connections or cable.

It made a definite difference, getting speeds around 36,000 instead of 48,000.

If anyone knows for definite what makes a bad extension, I'd be interested to know

If the cord is draped across a power source, it could pick up noise induction.

Some places also sell phone jacks that you plug into an electrical outlet. You need to have an electrical outlet near where your phone line comes in also. They sell for about $35.00.

True statement, but not particularly helpful.

I have a pair of those plug in cordless phone jacks. they really cut into your performance. I was getting 24 Kbyte using them, and 52+kbyte without them on the same PC using a 50 foot extension.

Typo edit.
