Living in a part of London where the cable companies have dropped us in it with substandard cabling, I have been late to learn the intricacies of broadband. (I should be getting ADSL in the next month!)
However, a client asked me to supply and set up a Draytek Vigor 2200USB router for ADSL, accepting a USB ADSL modem (BT likes to supply USB DSL modems). Does anyone have experience of this product (the router?) We spent a good deal of time last night trying to get the router working. We know the DSL connection works, we had it working on a single PC. We managed to upload the modem firmware into the router (as required. However, we couldn't get the PC to use the router properly for lightning internet access. I'm sure it's probably a case of checking one particular box, or added the IP range somewhere, but the manual is less than comprehensive in explaining required set-ups, especially since it is aimed at the SOHO market. Anyone have any pointers? If there are certain core settings that any DSL router requires to allow NAT from the network whilst maintaining the firewall, then I would really appreciate the advice. Thanks, Troubleshooter |

What does the modem use to connect to the internet? PPPOE?

Modem uses PPPoA. (What is the difference between this and PPPoE?)
The modem is a Westell Wirespeed 36R305 (but apparently this is the same as the Fujitsu 310). As I said, the modem works no probs when plugged directly into the PC USB socket, but in the router, no joy at all. Wedor, have you got ANY experience of broadband routers? I was wondering what standard options should be set for the bloody thing to work properly for connection sharing and NAT. Do I need to have port redirection, or should it figure that much out on its own? Should a DMZ'd PC work no problems with the router? (Cos it's not!) The router gives a list of known ports, which I presume is just for information - the obvious stuff: HTTP port 80 pop3 - port 110 etc However, I cannot browse at all. It seems to do a DNS lookup and then says website found, but no info ever seems to come to the PC. I'm stumped. I readily admit that I don't know what I'm doing, but I've never seen ANYTHING that lacked the simplicity of using intuition to get it right. I can normally solve anything by playing with it, but I'm tempted to save this one for the next Jewish wedding I go to so that I have something to say MAZELTOV with! (Blown my cover!) I hope I haven't bored you to death. Thanks for the reply Troubleshooter |
