you just connect everything up. and it should work right out of the box. the only thing you may need to install in win 98 is the ethernet card and the driver for it.

If it uses a static IP, you might have to setup the IP address, gateway and DNS, but that's no biggie either.

In control panel you click on your network settings, double click on TCP/IP, there you will see tabs for gateway and DNS. If this is required, the info will be provided by the ISP.

Good stuff HAL.

But from my experiance that stuff would be better disabled. Again he could check with the ISP.

2nd you dont' usually need their test software that comes with a CD I believe. You can just install the drivers for the NIC and hook it up.

also check into the link below if they are planning to add more computers with the advantage of a hardware firewall (or similiar products).

But I am I correct in guessing that all Routers have firewall based protection even without stating they do?

????? If you run a static IP, you MUST enter the gateway and DNS or it's not gonna work. If it's a dynamic IP, you don't need to worry about any of this.

I have a static IP and disabled all of those. I get download speeds of 4000+\sec (connection depending). Maybe I am missing something here.

You may think you have a static IP, but are you actually specifying it or is DHCP enabled instead?

Jade,

From a command prompt/DOS window, type "ipconfig /all" and see what it says for "DHCP Enabled". If it says NO, which is what it should be for static, then those DNS and gateway addresses had to come from somewhere, If it says Yes, then you are dynamic no matter what you experience. In that case, it is normal not to fill in DNS and gateway.

It just disappears right away. Either way I must be against the norm if it is true. So I'll just step aside

It won't disappear if you type it from a command prompt instead of in the run box.
